How would de-dollarisation affect Africa and the global economic order?

share

This seminar explores how de-dollarisation could reshape Africa’s economic autonomy, financial stability and global partnerships.

Overview

While the US dollar remains dominant, gradual shifts towards alternative currencies, payment systems and financial arrangements are challenging aspects of the global monetary order. For Africa, de-dollarisation could create opportunities for greater financial autonomy, diversified partnerships and reduced exposure to dollar-related shocks. However, it could also increase transaction costs, exchange-rate volatility and financial fragmentation.

This dialogue explores whether BRICS+, regional payment systems and emerging financial partnerships offer viable alternatives to dollar dependence. Speakers will also consider what these shifts could mean for African trade, sovereign debt, investment and economic resilience.

Moderator: Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Head, African Futures and Innovation and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Institute for Security Studies
